Eli Jones, Warren Johnson and Orville D. Baker served as judges, and awarded the first prize for the ladies to Eleanora S. Bailey of Winthrop; the second prize to Effie F. Newell of China, who has the power and displayed it, of bringing tears to the eyes of listeners; and the third to Annie V. Costello of Bangor. The first prize for the gentlemen to Frank Taylor of Vassalboro: the second to John W. Strong of Riverside; and third to Arthur L. Doe of Vassalboro.
Special mention should be made of Mary A. Bartlett of Litchfield, who excelled in simplicity of style and womanly bearing; of Millard Towle of Winthrop and George G. Low of Vassalboro. Annie M. Pierce, who spoke from merit, unconsciously defies competition in the rendering of "The Charge of the Light Brigade." James M. Estes, speaking also from merit, played the part of "Sergeant" to the satisfaction and admiration of all. All present seem to agree in saying that the Exhibition reflects great credit upon the school and its accomplished principal, Mr. R. M. Jones, and upon the able teacher in elocution, Mrs. Louise Woodworth Foss of Boston.
Those marked * did not compete for prize.
