The expenses of the republican national committee were well up in the air. It took in and paid out, chiefly to those who were in the pie, three millions and six hundred thousand dollars that came from office holders and those whom they could influence to give. The expenses of their campaign were fifty thousand dollars more than the receipts, and Chairman Carter has returned to his home, leaving creditors of the committee to the above mentioned shortage to lament their loss to lose the end of their untimely lament, as the case may be. The expenses of the national democratic committee are reported as exceeding five millions of dollars, and nearly all paid.
