The New York Daily Advertiser, in commenting on the recent triumph of the Liberal party in France, remarks—that it will place the minority in an awkward predicament, and may possibly cause the resignation or removal of M. Villele from the Cabinet. He is undoubtedly the ablest, and perhaps for that reason, among others, the most obnoxious individual in it to the opposition. His policy has been rigorous, and high-toned—more so, we should think, than the times, or public feeling would warrant. The progress of improvement, the force of popular opinion, the general dislike of hierarchical influence and controul in the Royal councils, cannot be resisted, and the government must, in some degree at least, yield to that combined power. It is a difficult lesson for any old Bourbon to learn, and perhaps more difficult to practice. But the time will come, unless much prudence is exercised in the administration of the National affairs when it will carry all before it.

Event Details

The Liberal party has triumphed in France, placing the minority in an awkward predicament. M. Villele, the ablest but most obnoxious Cabinet member, has pursued a rigorous, high-toned policy exceeding public feeling. Progress of improvement, popular opinion, and dislike of hierarchical influence in Royal councils cannot be resisted, requiring the government to yield. This is a difficult lesson for old Bourbons, and without prudence, popular power will prevail.
