Full Text

The House of Representatives.

One year ago, when the Whigs and Independents counted upon a majority even of 18, it was with much fear and trembling they heard the vote declared for Speaker on the first Wednesday of June. The Radicals cannot, in our belief, now make themselves in a majority of 3. A small affair, indeed, upon which to rely through the month of June, and to carry measures in accordance with the views of the party sachems.

They may call it a "handsome" majority; but if the Allies had no larger one last June, they would have been upon a very sandy foundation.

One year ago, Whigs and Independents anticipated a majority of 18 but heard the Speaker vote declared with fear on the first Wednesday of June. Now, Radicals have only a majority of 3, seen as insufficient to rely on through June for party measures. The Allies' similar slim majority last June would have been unstable.
