SYMPATHY FOR DOLLARS.
In a nearby city the other day we saw a poor young girl selling candy bars from place to place. She said she was helping her mother who was sick.
Later we found that some people in the city were hiring poor, forlorn working girls to sell this candy. They were paid wages, of course, but there was no sick mother and the employers were the kind of people who had no sympathy with sick folks at home.
At the larger hotels the check room girls look after the coats and hats and take the tips. Most men wish to help the girls. But the girls are working for mere wages for syndicates which have bought the hat checking privileges and which take the profits. The girls get but a small part.
In fact, so valuable have been these privileges that those in the checking business furnish the capital to establish and furnish restaurants. And still many engaged in doing these things think they are in respectable business.
