Solution to Problem.

That Connecticut is taking the lead
in the nation and world wide move-
ment to make electricity relieve the
policeman of his traffic directing du-
ties is evidenced by the test operation
in New Haven during the last two
months of a device which eliminates
all unnecessary delays which cause
the chief objection to the lights and
signals now in use in Connecticut cit-
ies. This device, invented by H. H.
Haugh, Jr., of Derby, during its two
months of operation has demonstrated
that electricity can direct the move-
ment of traffic with far more efficien-
cy than any human being. Vehicles
approaching the intersection at which
the electrical patrolman is stationed
are given the green light instantly
when there is no traffic on the cross
street, but if cross street traffic then
appears the "go" signal is immediately
changed as soon as the first vehicles
have safely passed. The device han-
dles heavy lines of traffic just as a
policeman would, allowing the line to
pass without interruption until there
is actually traffic on the other street.
Then it waits for a break in the line
or until a definite length of time has
passed and signals the cross traffic
through.

Event Details

Connecticut is taking the lead in using electricity to relieve policemen of traffic directing duties. A device invented by H. H. Haugh, Jr. of Derby has been tested in New Haven for two months. It gives green light instantly when no cross traffic, changes signal immediately if cross traffic appears after first vehicles pass, handles heavy lines without interruption until cross traffic, then waits for break or time and signals cross traffic.
