ALEXANDRIA.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 9.

The returns received from several counties yesterday afternoon and this morning furnishes very unpleasant evidence of the supineness and inactivity of a great portion of the citizens of those counties, whom the pressure of war and difficulty had last year roused to exercise the first and most valuable right of freemen; a right which, it is apparent, they have this year thought not worth attention.

The state of parties so far as we have information is as follows:—

Alleghany is not yet heard from: should the delegates from that county be all federalists, the federalists will have a majority on a joint ballot of both houses—a single democrat elected by that county will give a democratic majority.
