A Stab from Pennoyer.
He Reminds President Cleveland of the Distress of the People.

Governor Pennoyer of Oregon has addressed a letter to President Cleveland in which he calls his attention to the deplorable condition of the people of his state, and holds the arrogant dictator responsible for the sufferings of thousands of men, women and children throughout the land. The Governor reminds the President of the platform to which he gave his assent, and on which he was elected, pledging the use of gold and silver as standard money without discrimination, and adds if the pledge had been carried out the present appalling condition of affairs would never have occurred. He declares that never before in the history of Oregon was there such a terrible state of conditions; that two-thirds of the people were out of employment, and more than one-third without means of subsistence. "Appeals have been made," said the Governor, "to assemble the legislature to alleviate the condition of the people, but the redress is not in our hands, but in yours," and adds: "The responsibility lies entirely with you. The complete obedience of the lower house of Congress to your wishes has been observed throughout the world. It would obey your behest, and in this the Senate would give you support. You are a father, and you no doubt feel grateful to God when you, upon retiring to rest, look upon your sleeping babies in their couches, pictures of health, consequent upon having a sufficiency of food and clothing. I pray you, however, to enlarge the scope of your vision, and behold, if you can, in many a cot, children loved as much by their parents as yours by you, weak and sickly from insufficient food and clothing, innocent victims of vicious financial legislation, whose sleeping forms are bathed by the scalding tears of mothers bending over them in sorrow and despair, and then resolve, as you should, to faithfully carry out the pledges which your party gave to a confiding people. If you will do so, God will bless you and a grateful Nation will applaud you."
