The Census.

The census returns of this Town, have been completed, and the following is found to be the result: There are now 3600 inhabitants in the Town and Village of Dodgeville—1,765 males and 1,835 females.

According to the census returns of 1860 there was only 2181 at that time, showing an increase in five years of over 65 per cent. or 1419 inhabitants; at which rate of increase in five years more, would place the population of the Town at 5,940 or an increase of 3759 in ten years, which is 165 per cent. giving us a population in 1880 of 16,119.

This it will be remembered is in war times when a large population of our patriotic citizens are in the army, some having lost their lives and others not being connected with resident families could not be counted; and when a great many of our unpatriotic citizens are residents of "parts unknown," having skedaddled from the draft. Within the Village Corporation there is a population of 1,271. There is 687 families in the Town and Village. The largest family being thirteen and the smallest one, the average being about five and two-fifths. There is 1,567 persons of foreign birth in the Town and Village. There is one blind and five insane persons. The nationalities mostly represented are, Norwegian, English, Welsh, some Germans, and a few Scotch. As soon as we are able to procure it, we will give the result of the census returns in the county.
