THE EVENING NEWS.

A Runaway.—Yesterday afternoon, a pair of spirited bay horses, attached to a topless buggy from one of the Virginia livery stables, took a notion to runaway, while standing in front of the Catholic Church, in Gold Hill, no one being in the vehicle at the time. They came dashing up Main street at a fast speed, they turning out of collision-distance of everybody turning out of their way, and a number of quartz-teams; and as they reached opposite the News office, Zeke Barnes happened to be going down the street on horse-back, and making a dash at the runaways, grasped the bridle of one of the horses, but it slipped his hold, and by a sudden move of his own horse, he escaped being run over. Nothing daunted, however, Zeke spurred his horse and dashed after them, but they had gained some distance, and when the runaways reached opposite the Eclipse stables, three of the hostlers ran out to head them off, but without effect, and one of the men sprang at the head of one of the horses, but missed his hold on the bridle-rein, and fell flat into the mud, the wheels of the buggy just grazing him as he rolled out of the way, which prompt action on his part saved him from serious injury. Barnes, by this time, spurred up his sorrel, caught up, and firmly grasped the lines, stopping the rampageously-inclined runaways just in front of White & Mitchell's saloon. The stampede up to this period had been very exciting; and nobody was hurt, and nothing was damaged, although there were many people out on the street and sidewalks.
