VOLUNTARY LABOUR.

What the national government ought to have done six months ago, the private citizens of New-York, from necessity, are now compelled to perform. They found it useless to complain, and have turned out very generally in working at the fortifications erecting, in the rear of Brooklyn.--They arranged themselves in companies of about 450 men, and perform a day's labour each: Up to Saturday last, 4115 days' labour had been volunteered and performed.

The citizens of New-York, continue their patriotick labours on the heights of Brooklyn. The journeymen cabinet-makers turned out 80 men--society of weavers, 200--and journeymen printers, 200. Considerable sums of money have been subscribed for the support of these volunteers, as well as provisions, liquors, &c.--In one paper is a list of 1294 dollars and 50 cents.
