On Wednesday, the 31 of March, Dr. Verner, and Mr. Emmons, of New York, waited upon General Harrison, by appointment, at the house of the Mayor of Washington, and presented him a splendid Hat, as a specimen of American manufacture, on behalf of Mr. Orlando Fish, of New York, who made it expressly for the President elect.

Dr. Verner, in presenting it to the General took the occasion to observe that it was manufactured of the purest beaver, to protect the head of one of the purest patriots of the United States.

After some further complimentary and congratulatory remarks, he concluded by hoping that the General might enjoy health and prosperity to enable him to perform the arduous duties he had now been called upon to fulfill, to the entire satisfaction of every portion of this glorious Union.

To which General Harrison replied that he was much obliged for the flattering manner the Doctor had alluded to his former services, and that he was determined to persevere in the same course which had gained him the approbation of so large a portion of his fellow-citizens. He begged him to return his best thanks to Mr. Fish, and to assure him that he received his present with the greatest pleasure, coming from a person who had done so much to improve the manufactures of the country, evinced by the beautiful specimen now before him, which he would wear with pride and satisfaction. The General further remarked, that he had decided upon refusing all presents from rich men, as they might be regarded as likely to warp his judgment or bespeak his favor at some future period, but that he would always receive with pleasure any specimen of improvement in American manufactures from a mechanic, and would do every thing in his power to promote their advancement.
