The annual exhibition of the Agricultural Association embracing Nashua and the surrounding towns in this State and Massachusetts, was held on Wednesday and Thursday of the present week, and in its character and success met the highest expectation of its managers. It was not anticipated that the attendance would be large, nor that the exhibition would equal those of former years. It was indeed very questionable whether it was prudent to undertake the enterprise the present year. The war absorbs the public mind, and of course overrules all minor considerations.
But it must be an extreme emergency which will compel the wide awake men of Nashua to forego their accustomed festivities or hours of social enjoyment. The resolution was taken and executed.
The grounds are some two miles out from the city, containing about twenty acres, permanently fenced and furnished with all the requisite halls, stands and stalls for the favorable and safe exposition of stock, manufactured articles and farm productions, and provided with a very level half-mile trotting course.
The show of stock, particularly of working oxen and fat cattle, was very fine, a few good cows, horses and hogs were seen. Fruit was not abundant, but pumpkins and potatoes abounded, and gave evidence that the farmer would live and grow fat, whether he obtained sugar, rice and molasses or not. There were a few carriages and agricultural implements, an abundance of fancy articles, some pictures, penmanship and patentable inventions. The number of people in attendance was very respectable—much greater than was anticipated.
The military, a well drilled company, under command of Mayor Bowers, and the firemen, made a fine appearance, and added greatly to the show. Baldwin's Band of this city, and the Nashua Band, gave the audience high gratification.
At noon tables were spread on the grounds, under cover, and an excellent dinner furnished. At a later hour the multitude gathered about the platform, and were addressed by Mr. President Burnap, of Dunstable, in a very sensible manner. Speeches were also made by Ex-Mayor Beard of Nashua, and Ex-Mayor Smyth of Manchester, by Hon. Moody Hobbs of Pelham, Mr. Andrew Spaulding of Dunstable, and James O. Adams of Manchester.
Our thanks are due for many courtesies to our former citizen, David Gillis, Esq., to Mr. Beard of the Telegraph, and to Major Wright of the Pearl-street House, whose hospitalities we enjoyed. When the next fair at Nashua is held may we be there to see.
