Fire.—On Monday evening we were alarmed by a cry of fire, which burst out from a Twine Manufactory Walk near the Main-street, in Charles-town. The building and its contents of hemp, twine, &c. were almost instantly in flames; and the fire communicated to five adjacent buildings but by the activity and intelligence of the citizens of Charlestown, this town and neighbourhood, they were all saved, excepting the dwelling house of Mr. Otis Clap, and his work shop, with a considerable quantity of finished work, stock and timber. The total loss is estimated at 5000 dollars; of which 4000 were sustained by Mr. Clap; the residue principally by Mr. A. Gillis, and Mr. Nathan Bacon, who occupied the walk. It is well ascertained, that this was an incendiary act, as a person was seen to go towards the walk with fire, apparently a negro, to open one of the windows, and to make off. The person who saw this from his window, immediately ran to the walk, but too late to stop the progress of the flames, which had taken the tow, or to detect the incendiary. By this event, besides the injury to Mr. Clap, two industrious mechanics (Messrs. Gillis and Bacon) are deprived of most of their property. We hope a generous public will not leave them without the means of being useful to themselves and the community; but will contribute such relief as will enable them to re-establish themselves in business. The walk, we learn, belonged to Mr. S. Deblois, of Newport.
