Full Text

Extract of a Letter from James Monroe, Esq; dated Paris, June 27, 1774.

"Those of the Reformed Religion, of whom there are great Numbers in this City, are much alarmed, and taking Measures to secure their best Effects and retire to Holland; for the Proceedings of the Archbishop, and the Clergy of his Diocese, are very severe against them. If they are known to sing Psalms, or read the Scripture, they are immediately confined. Two or three Houses where they met have already been pulled down, by special Orders from his Majesty; and last Week a general Order was issued to the Magistrates of this City to return an Account of the Names of those in their Districts who either openly profess or are suspected of favouring Calvinism, or the Doctrines of Luther. Of the latter there are few, but of the former I dare say there are 10,000."
