Lexington, Ky., Jan. 7—Every eye in the United States is centered on "Old Kentucky," the home of Bourbon today, for the state legislature convened here this morning, and it will be for the first state assembly in the country to have before it the ratification of the bone dry amendment of the constitution, recently passed by the United States congress. And throughout the Blue Grass there is a feeling that the "colonels" will approve the measure.
A hard fight over the bill is assured, but a good working majority in both the house and senate was elected last November by their promise they would, if elected, vote for the prohibition amendment.
The chief organization behind the move to ratify the amendment is the Democratic Forward League, organized by Dr. A. J. A. Alexander, millionaire brother of Kenneth Alexander, noted turfman, now driving an ambulance in Italy. The League has attracted members of other parties and has considerable strength. Governor August Owsley Stanley is classed with the wets, as is Ollie James, senior United States senator, from Kentucky. J. C. W. Beckham, the other Kentucky senator, however, is avowedly a dry.
