LARENSEN'S BOMB GROUP RECEIVES UNIT CITATION

The heavy bombardment group with which Staff Sergeant John E. Larensen operates as a ball turret gunner was recently awarded a Distinguished Unit citation for its stand against more than 200 enemy fighter planes which attacked the group over Germany. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Fortress crews shot down and damaged 65 Nazi planes in the air and damaged or destroyed an additional 35 enemy planes on the ground.

He was a crew member of one of the Fortresses making the first shuttle bombing mission from a 15th AAF base in Italy to a base in Russia. As previously reported, T/Sgt. Maxwell Arbo was also a member of this initial shuttle mission.

Larensen is the 23 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Larensen of 793 Blue Hills Ave. He also wears the Air Medal and Three Oak Leaf Clusters.
