THE MISSIONARY DEBT.

Our readers have seen several appeals from the Missionary Secretaries and others, for funds to liquidate the Missionary debt, which has been fully explained to them by Dr. McFerrin, in the Advocate. The General Conference resolved to make what provision it could for the liquidation of this debt at the earliest possible day. The subject was fully discussed there, and the unanimous sentiment was, that, at every cost, the Church must be faithful to her pecuniary obligations. The debt must be paid, however long a time it may take to raise the funds. That they may be raised, the amount of the debt was divided among the various Conferences, with a request that each should contribute the sum apportioned to it. By this apportionment $2,200 falls to the share of the South Carolina Conference; $4,500 to Georgia; $1,500 to Florida; and $4,500 to Montgomery Conference. It has been suggested to the Editor several times to make an equitable division of the sum apportioned to Georgia to the several Districts in that Conference, that there may be some equality in the collections. We do this the less reluctantly, because we have for our guide the "apportionment" of the Board of Stewards made by authority of the Conference itself, and, therefore, to be considered a fair distribution of another debt—that to the superannuated preachers, widows and orphans, etc. Taking the figures of the Board for a guide in ascertaining the ratio to be assessed to each District we would suppose the following a just distribution of the Missionary debt in the Georgia Conference, viz:

$4,500.00

Distributed as this sum is over so large a territory, and with more years than one, in which to collect the money, if it cannot be done at once, the Georgia Conference will surely do its part towards meeting this obligation, which presses equally on the entire church.
