Extract of a letter to the Post-Master in this place, dated
Post Office, Chilicothe, Ohio, 4th Aug 1823.
"I now have the satisfaction of stating to you, that John Reese, the notorious mail robber is in safe keeping in Kentucky. He went on a few days since by way of Cincinnati, to Louisville, Ky and there took the stage for Lexington, by the name of D. Hanover, but owing to there being other passengers in the stage, he had no opportunity of effecting his villanious purposes until he left Lexington. On his way to Maysville, there being no passengers in the stage with him, he immediately commenced by cutting the Eastern bags, and taking out some packages, and when the stage stopped eight miles this side of Lexington, he went into a corn field, rifled the letters of their contents, and left them. They were soon discovered and pursuit made after Reese. He was taken near West Union, in Ohio, taken back to Kentucky, and is now safely lodged in jail. I hope he will find birds of a different feather in Kentucky from those of Ohio. No effort of the citizens of Ohio could bring the scoundrel to justice, being always discharged by the District Judge, and that too, in the face of testimony, that all others thought sufficient to convict him."
