Full Text

A misunderstanding involving $25,000,000 is to be settled between the British Government and the owners of the telegraph lines which have passed under its control. It was supposed that the crown had purchased the wires, poles, batteries, privileges and franchises for the sum already paid. It is claimed that her Majesty, instead of acquiring an absolute freehold and title to the telegraphs in her three kingdoms, secured only leasehold rights. And £5,000,000 are demanded for the proprietorship. An arbitration is to decide on the claim of the companies.
