At the late session of the General Court, a bill was brought in for a new excise revenue, viz — That from and after 1st day of October next, there be paid on every gallon Madeira Wine, — 1/. On every gallon of other Wine, — 8d. On every gallon of West-Rum, — 8d. On every gallon of New-England Rum, — 6d. On every gallon of other distilled spirits — 8d. On every gallon of imported malt liquor, — 4d. On every box of Lemons, — 4d. On every hundred of Limes, — 3d. On every lb. of Bohea Tea, — 4d. On every lb. of other India Teas, — 8d. On every lb. Foreign Cheese, — 4d. On every lb. of Coffee, — 1d. On every lb. of Chocolate manufactured out of this State, — 1d. On every lb. of imported Snuff, — 8d.

And on every lb. of imported Tobacco,--4d.

After several warm debates upon the propriety of passing a bill of this kind, it having been read a third time, and just at the close of the session, the yeas and nays were called by Mr. Pickering, when there appeared to be 23 for its passing, and 17 against it, but there not being a majority of the house present, therefore the motion was lost.
