THE TARIFF AND THE TORIES

The Tories seem to be in a most unpleasant predicament, in Congress, at present, and the great Ajax Telemon of the Globe, is equally puzzled How, very inconvenient, it often is, to be in the majority! The Tories of the House of Representatives, being largely in the majority, and having promised their constituents, to so modify the present "odious Tariff,' as to raise a sufficient revenue to defray the current expenses of the government, and at the same time, afford every article of consumption at a cheaper rate than at present--they find much difficulty in agreeing upon the principle, by which the levying, of this new and much improved Tariff, is to be effected. They have, however, been compelled to expose their cloven foot, and to show to the world, that they are opposed, as were their Fathers, the Tories --to American interests, American industry. and, in fact, the sustainers of the mammoth aristocracy of Europe. Hear the editor of the "Globe?" "The truth is, the national debt already accumulated by Federalism, during its short lease of legislation, together with the expenditures it has authorized, while, it cuts off the natural resources of the Treasury, leave no alternative, to the present democratic House of Representatives but to discriminate exclusively with an eye to revenue." American: readers! Do you understand why the editor has so particularly premised the reasons for adopting the principle in levying a tariff of duties, on articles of importation, for purposes of revenue. He begins with the tyrant's plea of necessity, by saying, in as much, as these whigs have brought the government in debt and as we have discovered that the tariff, which these Whigs have levied, has failed to produce a sufficient revenue to meet the demands of the government; therefore, we will repudiate the principle, heretofore, observed, in levying duties, and introduce a new rule. What is the character of the rule, they reject it is the principle of the American system, to sustain the poorer classes, and those of luxury, which can be obtained and enjoyed only by the few. This noble, and industry supporting principle, has been discarded; and one, which discriminates in operation The articles of consumption, which are indispensable to the great body of as the articles of luxury, which are only used by the drones of society. The poor will have to be taxed; twice as much, What will be the effect of this new principle in operation The articles of consumption,

The poor will be rendered poorer, and the wealth of the rich must be increased. The products of the enslaved pauper population of Europe, will flood our channels of commerce, and our own mechanics, will become beggars in the streets. They cannot compete with such opposition, since the necessaries of life, have been increased in price, from the increase of the duties on these articles, whilst the wages for their labor have been greatly reduced, by the demand for it, being so much lessened, from the vast influx of European fabrics? which can be purchased for much less, than they can afford to manufacture them,

These Tories have always shown themselves the friends of European interests, in opposition to the American. If they, ever depart from the wise policy of the Whig party, they will at once teach, by a fatal experiment, the laboring classes. that they are the most inveterate foes, to their prosperity and happiness.

Twelve months from the day they dispense with the wise policy of the whigs, and put in operation their own ultra principles, there will not be found, a sensible laboring man in the U. States, that will not spurn alike their leaders and their policy. So mote it be!!
