What is this article about?

A correspondent from the Lancaster Journal mocks a surprise expressed in another paper about no committee inviting the governor to a Tuesday procession, surmising it's due to his unknown residence or, more likely, his loss of dignity from branding 32,641 free electors as traitors, tories, and worse, thus undeserving respect.

Full Text

From the Lancaster Journal.

A correspondent in the paper printed by the Dickinsons, (the correct "narrators" of the order of Procession) is much surprised that a committee were not appointed to wait on the governor at an early period, to request his attendance on Tuesday last. I take the liberty to surmise the cause as follows:

1. That possibly the committee did not know the Governor lived in Lancaster.— No man will certainly think this an unreasonable surmise.

2. It is possible they might have thought that when a man descends from the high and exalted dignity of Chief-elect of a free state, to the blackguard exercise of branding 32,641 free electors with the epithets of traitors, tories, refugees, French aristocrats, British agents, or apostate whigs, he is not much entitled to the respect of his fellow-citizens. It is dignity that commands respect, and until we perceive something like dignity, we cannot consistently respect the officer nor the man.

Main Argument

the committee likely did not invite the governor to the procession because his undignified act of branding 32,641 free electors with derogatory epithets forfeits him the respect of his fellow-citizens; dignity commands respect.
