A Charleston paper of the 7th of July last, gives an account of the evacuation of Savannah, after which the following paragraph appears, which may give us an Idea of the Situation of the wretched dependants on the protection of the British forces.
"The distress which is necessarily attendant on events of such a nature, was alleviated as much as circumstances could admit of, by the attention and humanity that were shewn by his Majesty's officers to the inhabitants. But the misery of the people only began at leaving their homes. The rich by disposing of one part of their property, may indeed be furnished with means of keeping the other together, and of supporting themselves: but as to the middling and lower classes, whose first years are necessarily spent in acquiring establishments, by losing these they lose all they possess, and are again thrown into the wide world, as poor as when they first embarked in it, and with the additional circumstances of an increase of years, and the burthen of families; which the reasonable prospect they once had before them of acquiring a competence, if not wealth, had induced them to form. It would be needless to pursue this matter any further, that of explaining what is evident to every one, the miseries the loyal inhabitants of Georgia have already experienced, and must hereafter encounter, from the evacuation of Savannah. We must rest satisfied in the belief, that the sufferings of a part may be of benefit to the whole, and that every piece of information was obtained, every argument duly examined, and the consequences carefully considered before a measure was adopted which necessarily tended to distress so considerable a number of his Majesty's faithful subjects."
