Full Text

Barton. The Waterbury Bank Robber.—No intelligence has yet been received of the recapture of Barton, the Bank robber. He feigned to be so ill that five men carried him into the cars at Montpelier, and four men handled him very carefully in changing cars at White River Junction. On account of his supposed illness, he was allowed to remain in the saloon car, with his wife and child, without hand cuffs. The officer took a seat near the saloon. On looking after him at Hartland, he was missing, having evidently disappeared through the window, at North Hartland, five miles away. Conductor Foss saw a man get up from near the cars at North Hartland as they moved away, but gave no further thought to the matter until the discovery was made that Barton had escaped from the car.
