Col. Hunnewell, the late Inspector of the Ports for the District of Portland and Falmouth, and who was a revolutionary officer, in 1776, and has continued a faithful servant not only to this, but the general government ever since, in the several offices he has held, with honor to himself and his country, is now turned out of office-And for what ? To make way for James C. Jewett ! a young democratic "lawyer," but whose enmity to commerce, was sufficient to entitle him to a share of the loaves and fishes of office, under an embargo administration.
I would ask President Jefferson, who recommended Mr. J-- ? what reasons were given for turning out Col. H-- ?'and what this inspecting lawyer has ever done for his country, to entitle him to this office i-And if he can answer without blushing, it will be, because long habits of iniquity have placed him beyond shame.
