Full Text

Judge Hough, of Prescott, Wis., has the following in the River Falls Recorder concerning a recent paragraph about the authoress, Mrs. Southworth: "We see a story going the rounds that Mrs. Emma D. E. N. Southworth lived at Potosi, in this State, and was the wife of a poor tin ner there at an early day. The whole story is bosh. She never lived in Potosi, but did live for a couple of years at Platteville, where her husband has relatives now living. Her first efforts at writing were published in the Platteville Whig, established and published by Col. Alonzo Platte. Her husband was not a poor tinner. Her husband's brother, A. B. Southworth, was a tinner, and did business at Potosi. He is now a leading hardware merchant of San Francisco, Cal., where his brother (the husband of Mrs. Southworth) died in 1866 or 1867, of softening of the brain." We are informed by Mrs. J. H. Rountree, of this place, whose wife is a sister to the late husband of Mrs. Southworth, that the above is substantially correct—Grant County Herald.
