New York City Election.

Eighty-three thousand votes were cast at the election last Tuesday in the city of New York for Mayor, wherein Daniel F. Tiemann beat Fernando Wood between 2,000 and 3,000 votes. The New York Times gives the following reason for the defeat of Wood:

Mayor Wood owes his defeat to the general conviction that he was a dishonest man. It is universally conceded that he has ability, that he has evinced more energy and executive vigor than has ever been seen in that office before, and that nothing but integrity was lacking to make him the best Mayor New York ever had. But the settled conviction of the public judgment is that he lacks this: that in his private business dealings, and in his administration of public affairs, he has been alike selfish, unscrupulous, unprincipled and corrupt. It was this conviction which destroyed him.

Wood was endorsed by the Washington Union, the organ of the Administration, which characterized the election of Tiemann as a 'verdict condemning the democracy.'
