CONDITIONS HERE BETTER THAN ABROAD

People in this country do not begin to realize how bad conditions are on the other side of the Atlantic, according to Miss Lamond, who returned to Nenana this week after an absence of nine months, a considerable part of which time was spent in Scotland, says the News.

Conditions are bad enough in the United States, she says, but they do not begin to compare with what she saw abroad.

All of Scotland is in a turmoil, with factories closed and agitators very busy and numerous in all parts of the country. Production is very far below normal, large numbers of workers idle, and prices are very high, with fuel and many articles of food hard to get at any price.

Sugar and butter, for instance, command a price of six shillings a pound ($1.50) in Glasgow and sales of many articles are limited.

Miss Lamond says she found the people of Glasgow and other cities in Scotland on the lookout for new arrivals, and especially arrivals from the United States.

Americans appear to be listed as easy marks and prices go up whenever one is sighted.

Miss Lamond had to give up eight good American dollars for a room at one of the hotels and she found other grafters ready to take her money at every turn.

Miss Lamond had intended to make a long stay in the old country, but she found conditions so upset that she cut short her visit and hastened back to Alaska, which looks better to her than any place she saw during her absence.

On the way back, Miss Lamond visited with Mr. and Mrs. Dan Driscoll, former Fairbanksans, who are very comfortably settled on a little place in Oregon and, apparently, very well contented. They are building a new home for themselves.

Miss Lamond resumed her former duties at the Southern hotel, as housekeeper, on the first of May.
