Full Text

A serious accident occurred at about half-past one o'clock this afternoon, on the South Carolina Railroad, to the train from Augusta for Charleston, a mile and a half above Branchville, a second class car having been crushed into atoms by the displacement of a bar of iron.—The car was crowded, mostly with negroes, and every one was cut more or less, one boy seriously. Capt. Crews, the conductor, was badly hurt. Mr. England, the baggage master, was cut in two or three places, but not seriously. Great praise is due this gentleman and Mr. Matherson, the express messenger, and Mr. Rabb, the engineer, for their promptness in assisting the injured. I had no time to find out how far the cars were damaged. A boy named Miller had his ankle cut badly.
