Another of those frequent and disastrous collisions for which the Erie Railroad has gained such an unsavory notoriety took place about 5 o'clock on Sunday morning, on the Erie line, at a place called Almond, about 4 1/2 miles and half from Hornellsville. It seems that most of the bridges on certain sections of the road have recently been carried away by the heavy freshets that have there prevailed, and owing to this cause the express train from Chicago failed to connect as it should have done with the express from Cleveland at Salamanca. Under these circumstances the through passengers from Chicago were hooked on to a "wild cat" freight train, which was to work its way along the line. when about four miles and a half from Hornellsville, the "wild cat" collided with a freight train running in a contrary direction from Hornellsville, killing the engineer and fireman of the wild cat train, and entirely smashing both locomotives and seven or eight freight cars.
Fortunately the engineer and fireman of the freight train from Hornellsville were able to jump off in time to save their lives, and the passengers being at the end of the wild cat train, which was a very long one, escaped without any injury more serious than a few bruises. As usual in such cases, nobody is to blame, the telegraph operators each charging the other with being at fault. the one at Hornellsville stating that he did not receive the despatch announcing the wild cat train from Salamanca, until some time after the train had left Hornellsville.
