Characters:
John Smith.
Mrs. Smith, his wife.

The place is a typical American home. As the curtain rises, John Smith is seen sitting in an easy chair puffing a cigar and reading the sport page of the daily paper.
Mrs. Smith enters from the left, a worried look on her face, advances toward her husband, hesitates, advances again, hesitates again.

Smith—By golly, that was some fight.

Mrs. Smith—John, I—I need a new dress.

Smith—That sure was some fight.

Mrs. Smith—John, I—I—I need a new dress.

Smith—I'd a give a year's growth to 'a' seen it.

Mrs. Smith—(Laying her hand on the arm of his chair) John, may I?

Smith—What is it, Nell? I wasn't listening.

Mrs. Smith—I—I need $25 for a new dress.

Smith—Oh, is that all? (Takes out his purse) You're a good girl, Nell. (Pats her hand) Here, take this and get you a nice dress. (Hands her a $100).

Mrs. Smith—Oh my God! (Claps her hands to her heart and drops dead).
