THIS MORNING'S FIRE.
THE OLD SAW MILL DESTROYED
On South Street and Creek Bank-Hale &
Stalnaker's Box and Bung Factory.
Good Work by the Firemen, but the
Flames Destroy the Factory.
Just at 1 o'clock this morning an alarm
of fire was rung in from box 37, at the cor-
ner of Market and South streets, and
though the Department responded quick-
ly, so great a start had the flames that
when they reached the locality the fire-
men found a bright blaze bursting from
the roof of the old Hubbard saw mill, on
the creek bank, east of Main street, and
in an incredibly short space of time the
wooden portion of the building, lying
next the creek bank, was licked up like
chaff by the wind,
It was ascertained that the alarm was
turned in by Officer Joe Glenn, of the city
police. The officer was standing a square
or two south of the creek, when he smelt
wood smoke, and coming up to the Mar-
ket street bridge, he saw a dense smoke
pouring from the wooden structure next
the creek. At the same time the red
gleam of the flames was seen through
cracks in the roof. He at once rang in an
alarm from box 37.
The fire was doubtless of incendiary
origin. About a month ago an attempt
was made to fire the building, and only an
early discovery prevented its success.
There was no fire in the furnace or else-
where yesterday, and the only possible
origin of the flames was at the hands of a
fire-bug.
