Massachusetts Republicans achieved strong pluralities for state offices in the recent fall election, with Treasurer Chapin at 72,000, Secretary Olin at 69,000, and Attorney General candidate Malone at 57,000, despite narrower margins for Governor Guild (22,000) and Lt. Full Text

Massachusetts Republicanism.

While the plurality of Colonel Guild as the Republican candidate for governor of Massachusetts, in this fall's election, was only 22,000, and that of Mr. Draper, the candidate for lieutenant governor, dwindled to an insignificant 2000, the pluralities given the party's candidates for secretary of state, treasurer and attorney general were a revelation of the great strength of Massachusetts Republicanism. Treasurer Chapin had over 72,000 plurality: Secretary Olin, 69,000, and Malone, the Republican candidate for attorney general, although a new man to the voters, received 57,000 plurality

Although the voters of Massachusetts occasionally get confused by mixing national politics with state elections and have even been known to so far forget themselves as to elect two or three Democratic governors, they have not once, since the Republican party was born, failed to entrust that party with the management of the several state departments. Since 1858, the commonwealth has had but three secretaries, Oliver Warner, 1858 to 1876: Henry B. Pierce, 1876 to 1891, and William M. Olin, since 1891, all three Republicans. In a similar way the state treasury and other state departments for close to half a century have been in the hands of faithful Republican officials, whom the people have returned to office over and over again by overwhelming pluralities, just as it has done this year, although the vote was close on the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor
