LYNCH VICTIMS MOUNTING:
5th LA.
SCENE OF MURDER

MINDEN, La. -- Investigation was begun here Friday into the murder of a 28-year-old refinery worker, John C. Jones, but District Attorney Wallace doubted he would find "much cooperation" in obtaining names.

Jones was found beaten to death on the dam of a small lake near here on August 9. Deputy Coroner Thomas Richardson last Thursday described the killing as a lynching. It is believed to have been the result of charges against Jones that he had attempted to enter the home of a white woman.

Released from Jail
Since the unidentified woman refused to press charges, Jones and an unidentified young man were released from prison, and it appears that the lynch mob kidnapped Jones shortly thereafter.

Jones' battered body was found a day after he had been released from jail, marked with slashes and bruises that apparently had been inflicted by a flat object like a board or a wide leather belt.

Seized by Mob
The unidentified young man is said to have told law officers that he and Jones were seized upon leaving the jail and that he was knocked unconscious and subsequently released.

Local authorities have not asked for state or federal aid in their investigations, but deny that the case has been suppressed.
