Full Text
The conviction of young Walworth
and his sentence to imprisonment for
life go far to redeem the jury system
and the judiciary of New York from
the contempt into which both were
rapidly falling.
Walworth's crime
was not without some provocation. The
letters of the murdered father show
him to have been a brute whom it was
dangerous to permit to run at large.
But the son's morbid intensity of feeling
and the indifference with which he
seems to contemplate the most horrible
of crimes show that the interests and
wellbeing of society require protection
from his unlawful acts quite
as much as from those of him whose
life he took. It must not be lost sight
of that the slaying of a human being is
a grievous crime for which the offender
must be held responsible. There
is quite too much carelessness of human life during these latter years and
we need some stern example of the
infliction of the old penalty to bring
men to a better sense of the criminality
of murder.
