Full Text
On Monday 13th inst. Mr. Pearce presented to the House the resolutions of the Legislature of this State, passed at their late session, by which our Senators in Congress were instructed to vote for the expunging resolutions, and for R. M. Johnson for Vice President.
It seems from the remarks of Mr. Pearce, that the resolutions of our Legislature have never been presented in the Senate.
We never supposed that Messrs. Robbins and Knight would act in accordance with the expressed will of the State, the representatives of whose sovereignty they are.
There is too much of modern whigism in their composition, for them to condescend so low as to obey the voice of a democratic legislature.
But we confess that we felt somewhat surprised, that they should have refused merely to present the resolutions.
We can account for it in this way only-- that they are sensible that their public conduct is odious to the democracy of the State. and that their political career is rapidly drawing to a close. These gentlemen, who at home and abroad, clamor about the usurpations of the Executive and the disregard of those in power for the rights and liberties of the people, treat with utter contempt the express will of their constituents in regard to the Vice Presidency, and refuse even to make that will known to the Senate by presenting the resolutions that avow it. Yet these are your true whigs! These are your staunch, unquestionable supporters of the constitution and of popular rights! O fudge!
