WASHINGTON—Reporting to his chief on the present state of dry law enforcement, Director of Prohibition James E. Jones yesterday told Gen. Lincoln C. Andrews, federal dry czar, that diversions of industrial alcohol for illegal purposes had been drastically cut down within the last few weeks.
No figures were given out, but Mr. Jones predicted that the day of flooding the country with concoctions manufactured from purified industrial alcohol was past and that in the near future the makers of drinks based on alcohol would be forced to turn direct to the manufacture of moonshine.
"Bootleggers will make their last stand manufacturing white mule liquor and other home brewed concoctions," Mr. Jones predicted.
"With the supply from smugglers overseas and in Canada cut off and alcohol diversions cut down to a trickle, the still will be the only source of liquor left them. As the smuggled goods decrease and alcohol becomes scarcer, the number of stills will greatly increase."
According to Director Jones, the only alcohol diverted today escapes through the illegitimate channels leading to manufacture of drug supplies, perfumes, and other articles where alcohol is an essential ingredient. Automobile companies and other concerns which use a strongly denatured alcohol allow very little to find its way into the hands of bootleggers, he said.
