Full Text
The Canadians call their Red River region the northwest, as we do our region stretching along south of that territory. A paper published in that territory, called The Nor'wester, of September 21, gives some particulars of the condition of the colony. We learn that the demand for cattle for the United States is felt there as in Canada, and that large droves have been sent over the line and disposed of at good rates. From the public account for the year ending May 31, it appears there is a small balance in the colonial treasury. Notwithstanding the grasshopper plague there was a good crop, the yield of wheat being in many instances from thirty to thirty-five bushels to the acre. There was a fair demand for wheat at six shillings sterling per bushel. Other cereals were also abundant.
The Nor'wester contains an article on the proposed purchase by Canada of the northwest territory, to which it says that the people there would have preferred the erection of the country into a crown colony, but if this cannot be obtained then it thinks a union would be to the advantage of all. It strongly urges upon Canada the necessity of taking some steps which shall secure the trade of the territory, instead of allowing it, as it is rapidly doing, to fall entirely into the hands of the people of the United States.
