Believes 'Numbers' Racket Is Still Alive In Atlanta

Proof that the "numbers" racket may be still alive in Atlanta was uncovered here Monday when police apprehended two men and a bag of lottery tickets at the intersection of Chestnut and Pelham Streets, N. W., after a chase by auto and on foot.

Vice Squad Detectives E. F. McKillop and W. E. Peacock said they first spotted the car believed to be a numbers car about 11:40 a. m. Monday traveling east on English Avenue N. W., from North Avenue, N. W.

"When the driver saw us he speeded up and turned east on Pelham Street," police declared, where the passenger in the car tossed out a bag of lottery tickets.

The car then proceeded to Griffin and Pelham Streets, where the driver jumped out and ran, police related. He was caught after a brief foot race, they added.

Both men, the driver and the passenger, were lodged in the city jail on disorderly conduct-lottery, the officers reported. The men were listed as, Charles Harris, 18 of 452 Tyler Street, and John Wesley Bailey, 26, of 377 Thurmond Street, N. W.
