To the Printers of the New-Hampshire Gazette:

The great Advantage of public Schools, hath long been experienced by the enlightened and polite Nations in the World: The Happiness, Prosperity and Glory of any People, depends greatly on the Education of the Youth. The wisest and best Men have in all Ages attended to this very important Concern, knowing it to be the Foundation and Corner Stone, whereon to build all human Glory. From this Consideration, Men of Fortune have given Donations to maintain free Schools. Nothing is more useful to the Public, or honorable to the Donor. It is really strange there are no more Instances of this kind in America. In Europe, there are many, but in this Country I know of but one, that is, Governor Dummer's in Newbury. This School hath been eminently serviceable, and will undoubtedly be a great Blessing to the latest Ages, and perpetuate the Donor's Name with Honor to the End of Time.

May many follow his noble Example, and share with him in just Applause. They can no Way contribute so much to the Felicity and Glory of their Country. To lay a Foundation for the Happiness of all future Generations, whereby our Estates will be doing great Good to Mankind, promoting Virtue and the Glory of GOD, to the End of the World, is truly noble, and must give infinite Pleasure to a generous Mind.

The fair Sex, (to many of whom Nature has given fair Minds, whose Education is generally neglected) plead with silent Eloquence in the Ear of every Man of Fortune, for his Commiseration and Bounty, that a Foundation may be laid for their Instruction: that those Beams of Knowledge may shine into their Minds which are so great an Ornament to Men; and would make them more amiable and useful Companions.

A FRIEND TO MANKIND.
