CONDESCEND TO MEN OF LOW ESTATE.
The Inebriate Reformation besides the good it does to its own class of subjects, may indirectly benefit many other unfortunates. Not every man who wears a ragged coat, or leads a wandering or idle life, is of course intemperate. And yet the usages of good society almost forbid a minister of the gospel, or a church member, from mingling with them publicly even for their good. Not so did our Lord shun the intercourse of such, nor does the apostle seem to recommend it, when he exhorts, "mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate."
It is an alarming fact, that the race of idlers and vagrants, of Sabbath breakers and neglecters of public worship, the materials for mobs and revolutions, is rapidly increasing among us.— Why should not the disciples of Christ freely and fearlessly mingle with "the lower classes," to the intent that like their Lord and Master, they may be instrumental of persuading the publican and Pharisee to enter into the kingdom of heaven?
