Making Getaway Toward Nogales In Stolen Car

"Hi-Jackers" Turn Over Near Amado And Are Captured By Leatherman

Clarence Lampher, 23, and Frank Eddington, 28, who hi-jacked an automobile salesman in Tucson Monday night, were captured about 1:30 o'clock yesterday morning by Deputy Sheriff R. Q. Leatherman and lodged in the county jail.

Jack Thornton, 30, the salesman who was held up by the pair, was found on "A" mountain, in Tucson about 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning in an unconscious condition and badly beaten up. Two University of Arizona boys, exploring the mountain, discovered the missing man.

The bandits had apparently got Thornton, who is employed as a salesman by Monte Mansfield's Ford agency in Tucson, to demonstrate a Dodge car to them.

After knocking the salesman unconscious and ridding him of all his possessions, including his shoes, they started toward Nogales to make a getaway.

Near Amado the stolen car turned over and was totally wrecked. Otho Kinsley of Kinsley's service station phoned to the sheriff's office about the wreck and the abandoned car and Deputy Leatherman rushed to the scene.

A few miles this side of Kinsley's service station two men flagged Leatherman for a ride. They happened to be the pair he was looking for. They did not realize they were flagging an officer.

Lampher, the youngest of the pair, was found to be injured but whether he was hurt in the auto wreck or in the scuffle with the automobile salesman, is unknown.

Lampher claims to be from Oregon and Eddington from Canada. In their possession was found several pass keys.

While being finger-printed yesterday at the county jail Lampher said he wished he had a dollar for each time he has been finger-printed.

Lampher was found wearing the shoes taken from the feet of the man held up.
