Bear over in the Clarks Fork Country like their mutton as well as those elsewhere and this summer have killed 100 head for John Tolman and 7 head for R. G. Hopkins.
"Bill" Bush, herder for the latter, believes that he got the chief offender a couple of weeks ago over on the Little Rocky on Beartooth Mountain when he killed a she-bear that had been disturbing his sheep and worrying him considerably.
Mr. Bush's pleasure in his achievement is spoiled however by the fact that "Dusty", the collie he has been bragging on for years as the greatest bear-dog in the country, is not the dog he thought he was.
It appears that "Dusty" treed the cub and while he was sitting on his haunches, barking vociferously, and gazing up in the branches, the mother bear came up behind him and gave him a cuff that knocked him 40 feet into the bushes.
Since that time "Dusty" shivers whenever he sees a black stump and Bill is not talking to him when he says, "Way round 'em Shep" for "Dusty" now figures that four inches is far enough for any dog to be away from his master's heels in a bear country.
