FORTIFYING
On Thursday last the citizens began to break ground for fortifying the Battery.
Every heart will heave a sigh to see the finest walk in the world destroyed. We must forego this, and every pecuniary consideration to save our liberties; and our violated Independence. Application having been made to all our citizens at their houses to contribute their voluntary labor, or pay at the rate of 5s per day for raising fortifications—It is said the Mayor, Col. Hamilton; and several of our principal characters have enrolled themselves to work personally—As there seems to be but one opinion throughout America, of standing vigorously, and to a man on our defence against any, and every hostile power; we are happy to add, there are few indeed who have refused to be enrolled to work or pay—and it is observed, that most of these few are ALIENS.
