Street Commissioner.
There is no office in the gift of the corporation more important than that of street commissioner. True that position is not filled by the direct ballot of the citizens, but great care should be exercised by the council in their choice of this officer. If they succeed in selecting a good man, our streets and pavements will be kept in good condition and money will be saved to the treasury. If they select an inefficient officer, our side-walks will be kept in the same deplorable condition that they are at present and our streets will not receive the much needed repairs. Looking to the improvement of the town we would suggest to the new council to combine the duties of street commissioner with those of lamp-lighter and policeman, and require the person appointed to give bond for the faithful performance of his duty. By giving to one man the pay which belongs to the three duties spoken of, together with the work he should do, it would pay him sufficient to give his whole time to the town affairs. We believe that if the new council could induce Luther Swerengen to accept the duties of which we speak, no better selection could be made. Luther understands keeping the streets and pavements in repair, and besides this, he will see that the "boys" behave themselves, and make a first-class officer generally.
