HUNTING FOR TROUBLE.
In all our life we don't think we have ever seen a more striking example of a nation hunting for trouble than is exemplified today by the United States in China. Ostensibly for the protection of a few Americans in business in China, the United States is treading on thin ice, likely to be embroiled in war not only with China but perhaps other countries. The utter senselessness of this course ought to be apparent, it seems to us. What would be the result of war with China? Thousands of Chinese killed and thousands of Americans slain. There are only a few hundred Americans in any sort of danger in China. They were amply warned of their danger. Why didn't they get out? And if the United States must send its army and navy for their protection, why could not the Americans be hog-tied, and taken out by force? That would be far better than risking the sacrifice of thousands of lives unnecessarily to the god of war. Anyway, after warning has been issued and means of removal from danger provided, America has performed its whole duty to its citizens on foreign soil. If they prefer to stay on in the face of such warning, then let them stay, say we, and take the consequences.
