AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE

DOMESTIC PRODUCE AND MANUFACTURES.

The lover of American prosperity, will perceive in an advertisement, in the Aurora of yesterday, from the Repository for the sale of Home Manufactures, an interesting evidence of the progress of manufactures under circumstances new and unexampled in usefulness and utility in the whole world.

The articles of manufacture advertised are all produced at what is sometimes called the Alms House, by others the Bettering House—and the Poor House; which is in reality the most benevolent and best conducted asylum for the poor in health and pure, of any on earth—

For to it flock the poor and afflicted, not only from all parts of this state, but from the surrounding States, and even from some of the remotest states—to obtain relief from disease—to obtain employment—and to obtain the meed of public munificence to the indigent and helpless unfortunate.—

This house is at once, a school of benevolence, an example of the efficacy of regular habits—of the health and comfort of moderate employment for those who would otherwise be idle and useless to society, and a striking refutation of those barbarous and anti-social writings which have been published in European nations, only to palliate the miseries which wicked governments draw down upon society.

In this place, where the hungry are fed, the naked clad, the unfortunate cherished, the maniac protected, the sick and sore made whole; industry wears an air of cheerfulness and action, that almost forbids the idea of poverty, and totally satisfies the man of humanity, that it is only want of benevolence or of knowledge, that prevents every community from maintaining its poor and sickly, and even rendering misfortune, without inconvenience or injury to the poor, capable of largely remunerating the community.

Ye men of generous hearts who visit Philadelphia from the surrounding or distant states—go and visit the Alms House—it stands on the square next to the Pennsylvania Hospital—and here be not tired of seeing and examining every thing—and treasure up the information and the example for your own state; to imitate such an establishment with success would be glory and consolation for any good man for ever—it would be living for some purpose.

While we are upon this institution, let us not forget, that although the establishment has existed for several years, and great merit and praise belonging to the founders and guardians by which it was regulated; that it was after the democracy became ascendant, that the useful manufactures were introduced, and only about four or five years ago; the whole institution has indeed undergone a revolution—its comforts, and resources have been improved—beyond conception.
