SUPREME COURT.
The trial which commenced on Thursday last, against Jethro Hussey, Albert Gardner, Wm. Coffin, James Barker and Randal Rice, citizens of Nantucket, charged with robbing the Bank of that town, closed on Tuesday evening and yesterday morning the Jury gave in their verdict; the four first, were acquitted, and Randal Rice, found GUILTY. We hear the Court have suspended his sentence until the next term, upon his recognizing himself to the President and Directors of the Nantucket Bank, in treble the value of the money stolen, being 60,000 dollars, with sufficient surety or sureties, in the same sum, to the satisfaction of the Directors of said Bank, to respond the treble damages that may be awarded against him: also to the Commonwealth in 400 dollars. himself as principal, with sureties in the same sum, to appear next term, to receive sentence on said indictment, and to stand committed until sentence be so recognized. Not being able to procure it, he is now confined. This cause has excited more attention, than any one tried within our remembrance; and the public opinion is greatly divided on its merits.--The discussion of it consumed four days and an half; and the verdict of the jury, composed of just and judicious men, cannot but be deemed proper.
The transaction which gave rise to the trial, is sincerely to be lamented. In an island, where friendship, benevolence, and mutual good office resided -where harmony cheered and enlivened business for years ;-and where industry wore the chaplet of honestly-acquired wealth, this unhappy event has estranged the nearest connections; destroyed copartnerships in business, and made breaches in the most friendly societies ;-and we think we do not verge on error, when we say, that the real pecuniary damage done thereby to the inhabitants could not be repaired by a sum less than fifty thousand dollars.
