Full Text
President Hayes evidently believes that the time has come when useless repining for the past, and equally useless and uncalled-for apprehension for the future, should be laid one side, and the people should awake to a comfortable enjoyment of the blessings of peace and returning prosperity, which they actually have, and are likely, with reasonable prudence and energy, to keep. This sentence from the opening of his message, should be posted in every household: "Abundant harvests have rewarded the labors of those who till the soil, our manufacturing interests are reviving, and it is believed that general prosperity, which has so long been anxiously looked for, is at last within our reach."
